Sheldon Henry Solow has been a builder/owner of residential and commercial properties in New York City since 1950. His buildings have set new standards of excellence in design and the application of innovative technology. He has long recognized the synergistic relationship of art to architecture that is reflected in all of his buildings.
His 50-story office building at 9 West 57th Street was the only building in New York State to be cited by The Wall Street Journal in an article on outstanding buildings in the United States. Mr. Solow also was the first builder to construct townhouses in New York City since the 19th century.
In 1991, Mr. Solow formed the Solow Art and Architecture Foundation which supports research for scholarly studies. The Foundation funds Senior Research Fellowships at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens for research at the Acropolis and Corinth and summer graduate students’ internships in various departments of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Mr. Solow was born on July 20, 1928 in New York City, son of the late Isaac and Jennie Solow (née Brill). He was educated in New York City and attended New York University where he studied engineering and architecture from 1946-1949. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, by Yeshiva University in 1992.
Mr. Solow resides in Manhattan with his wife, Mia (née Fonssagrives) and his son, Nikolai. His older son Stefan also resides in Manhattan with his wife, Stacey.
